What to Do in a Dental Emergency

Knocked-Out Tooth

  1. 1. Pick up the tooth by the crown (top), not the root
  2. 2. Rinse gently with water if dirty - don't scrub
  3. 3. Try to place it back in the socket if possible
  4. 4. If not, keep it moist in milk or saliva
  5. 5. Call us immediately - time is critical!

Severe Toothache

  1. 1. Rinse mouth with warm salt water
  2. 2. Use dental floss to remove any trapped food
  3. 3. Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek
  4. 4. Take over-the-counter pain medication as directed
  5. 5. Call our office for same-day appointment

Broken or Chipped Tooth

  1. 1. Save any pieces if possible
  2. 2. Rinse mouth with warm water
  3. 3. Apply gauze to any bleeding areas
  4. 4. Use a cold compress to reduce swelling

  1. 1. Rinse with mild salt water several times daily
  2. 2. Take pain medication as directed
  3. 3. Do NOT apply heat to the area
  4. 4. Call us immediately - abscesses are serious infections
